About the activity

Four big baubles hang on the tree – each one hides an activity. In Bauble patterns children finish a row of decorations on a branch: first by colour, then by size and shape (8 rounds). In What’s in the present? they tap the present, guess which toy is inside and clap its name together, syllable by syllable. In Baking gingerbread they put the ingredients in a bowl, mix the dough, cut out shapes, bake them and decorate the gingerbread with icing by tracing dots and lines with a finger. In Bell chimes they play a song on coloured bells and repeat a bell dictation.

After each activity new decorations appear on the tree. When all four are done, the star on top lights up, the whole tree glows and the presents underneath can be opened.

What children develop

  • continuing a pattern by colour, size and shape
  • listening to words – clapping syllables
  • fine motor and pre-writing skills while decorating gingerbread
  • rhythm, auditory memory and playing by colours

How to use it in class

  1. In What’s in the present?, let the children guess out loud before the present opens completely.
  2. After Baking gingerbread, bake real gingerbread with the children or cut shapes out of play dough.
