About the activity

A kite is waiting in an autumn meadow and its tail needs decorating. On the start screen you choose counting from 1 to 5 or from 1 to 10. The task card shows the children how many of which shapes to hang on the tail, for example 6 red rectangles and 9 blue squares. They drag the shapes from a tray of squares, rectangles, circles and triangles in four colours. Dots on the card show how many shapes have been added, and a finished row gets a tick.

If a child picks a shape that is not in the task, it goes back to the tray. Tapping a shape on the tail takes it off again. When the task is complete, the kite takes off and swirls in the wind among falling leaves. The Play again button sets a new task, different every time.

The game needs no reading: the task is made of numbers, shapes and colours. Kite is free.

What children develop

  • counting to 10 and matching quantities to numbers
  • telling shapes apart: square, rectangle, circle and triangle
  • telling colours apart and sorting by two features at once
  • fine motor skills when dragging shapes across the board

How to use it in class

  1. Before the game, name the shapes and colours in the tray with the children.
  2. Let the children take turns: each child hangs one shape while the others count out loud.
  3. After the game, make a paper kite and decorate its tail with the same shapes.
