About the activity

The house has four dark windows – there is one activity behind each of them. In Family tree children drag portraits into frames by generation: grandparents at the top, parents in the middle and children at the bottom. Then they tap family members and find out who is whose mum, dad, brother or sister. In From shortest to tallest they line the family up by height on steps, answer who is taller and who is shorter, and put shoes in order. In I help at home they help the family: they find Grandma’s glasses, water the flowers, tidy away the toys, lay the table, feed the cat and clear the snow. The Family memory game has an easier version with 8 cards and a harder one with 12.

After each activity one window lights up and family members appear in it. When all four are lit, the family has its photo taken in front of the house. The game shows one example family and never claims that every family looks like this.

What children develop

  • understanding family relationships and generations
  • comparing and ordering by height and size
  • helping at home and matching things to activities
  • memory and attention in the memory game

How to use it in class

  1. After Family tree, let the children draw their own family tree with photos or drawings.
  2. In the memory game, children take turns at the board – each one turns over two cards.
