About the activity

Five muddy boots stand in the window – each one is an activity. In Clean the boots children scrub the mud off five boots with a brush and say what colour each boot is. In Treats for the boot they put as many treats in the boot as the tag shows – a number or dots like on a dice (8 rounds, numbers 1 to 5). In Who was good? they sort pictures of behaviour: does it belong to the angel or to the little devil? In A poem for Saint Nicholas the teacher reads, the children repeat each line and then fill in the last words. In Saint Nicholas’s paths they guide Saint Nicholas with a finger along winding paths to the children’s boots.

After each activity one boot shines and lights up. When all of them are clean, night falls, Saint Nicholas fills the boots together with the angel and the little devil, and in the morning the boots are full of treats.

What children develop

  • fine motor skills – scrubbing, dragging and guiding a finger along a path
  • counting to 5, numerals and dice dots
  • telling good behaviour from bad
  • memory and speech with the poem, naming colours

How to use it in class

  1. Before Saint Nicholas’ Day, let the children clean their own boots and put them in the window.
  2. In Who was good?, talk with the children about how they can improve their behaviour.
