About the activity

In Meet the colours, children first tap the balloons – a balloon flies to the middle and three things of the same colour appear around it, for example a strawberry, a tomato and a ladybird. Then they tap the balloon that matches the colour of a paint splash, and finally they look for a picture that has the colour of the splash. At the end the balloons fly up and form a colourful arc. In Colour houses, children drag things from a blanket into the house of the same colour – the car into the blue one, the sunflower into the yellow one. In What colour is it?, an object is grey and the children tap the drop of the right colour to colour it in (8 objects). In Colour paths, they guide balls with a finger along winding paths to the house of their colour; over three rounds the paths cross more and more.

In the teacher settings you can choose to play with 4 colours (red, blue, yellow, green) or with 10 colours (also orange, purple, pink, brown, black and white). When a bubble shows the name of a colour, a recorded voice says it in the language of the game. At the start of each game a pointing hand shows what to do. There is no music, nobody can lose, and every time the game starts the colours and things change.

What children develop

  • recognising and naming colours
  • sorting things by colour
  • linking colours with everyday things (a strawberry is red, a cucumber is green)
  • fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination when guiding a ball

How to use it in class

  1. After Meet the colours, look for things in the classroom that have the same colour as the balloon.
  2. Start with 4 colours and switch on 10 colours once the children know them well.
