About the activity

Little bottles of paint and a glass bowl stand on a table. In Magic Colour Mixing, children drag the bottles to the bowl, pour in two colours and a wooden spoon stirs them – red and yellow make orange, blue and yellow make green. A card in the top left corner shows which three colours there are to discover. In What colour will it make?, the bottles pour the paint themselves and the children tap the drop with the colour that will appear (6 rounds). In Which colours make it?, the finished colour waits in a bowl next to it and the children pour in the two right colours (4 rounds).

In Build a Rainbow, children drag coloured stripes onto the grey arcs of a rainbow: in round 1 following the picture from the outside in, in round 2 following the picture in any order, and in round 3 from memory – an eye button shows the picture again. At the end, the sun peeks out from under the rainbow. In Colour by Dots, children pick a colour and tap the spaces with the same dot until the picture is coloured in (a fish, a kite, a butterfly, a train, a parrot…). The pictures have 6, 9 and 12 spaces.

Every colour has its own small symbol (a heart, a drop, a sun, a leaf…), which helps children who still find colours hard to tell apart. When a bubble shows the name of a colour, a recorded voice says it in the language of the game. There is no music, nobody can lose, and every time the game starts the colours and pictures change.

What children develop

  • recognising and naming colours
  • understanding how mixing makes new colours (orange, green, purple, pink, brown)
  • the order of colours in a rainbow and memory
  • fine motor skills when dragging bottles and stripes

How to use it in class

  1. After the game, mix watercolours on a palette with the children and check whether you get the same colour as in the game.
  2. Before What colour will it make?, let the children guess out loud and only then tap a drop.
