About the activity

First the children choose whether to preserve fruit or vegetables, and an easier or a harder level. Jars with coloured lids stand on a shelf, and the harvest is in the basket below: apples, pears, plums, grapes, lingonberries, elderberries, quinces and rose hips, or cucumbers, green beans, tomatoes, peppers, beetroot, cauliflower, onions, carrots and pumpkin. Children put the produce into the jars.

The activity suits an autumn topic about the harvest and storing food for winter.

What children develop

  • recognising and naming fruit and vegetables
  • sorting by type and colour
  • learning how food is stored for winter
  • fine motor skills when dragging the produce

How to use it in class

  1. Show the children a real jar of stewed fruit or pickled cucumbers and talk about why we preserve food.
  2. Start with the easier level for younger children and leave the harder one for the oldest group.
