About the activity

In Forest Trees children learn that broadleaf trees have leaves and fruits while conifers have needles and cones, and they match an oak leaf, a beech leaf, spruce needles or a pine cone to the right tree. In Animal Homes they drag each animal to its home. In Mushroom Hunt they put only edible mushrooms in the basket and learn that we always pick mushrooms with an adult. Forest Paths and Find Differences are waiting too.

The activity suits an autumn forest project and is good preparation for a walk in the woods.

What children develop

  • recognising broadleaf and conifer trees
  • knowledge of forest animals and where they shelter
  • telling edible from poisonous mushrooms and staying safe in the forest
  • visual perception and attention when finding paths and differences

How to use it in class

  1. Bring leaves, cones and needles into the classroom and let the children sort them for real.
  2. With the mushrooms, stress the rule: we never pick mushrooms without an adult.
