About the activity

In Meet the senses children tap the eye, ear, nose, tongue and hand and find out what we sense with each of them. Then they choose: Colour detectives (they look for something of a given colour in the classroom), Hearing (they listen to a sound and tap the right picture), Smell (does it smell nice or not?), Taste (sweet, sour, salty or bitter?), Touch (soft or hard? warm or cold?) and Puzzle, in an easier and a harder version.

The activity links work on the board with moving around the classroom and exploring real objects.

What children develop

  • learning the five senses and their sense organs
  • telling things apart by hearing, smell, taste and touch
  • sorting by properties: sweet – sour, soft – hard, warm – cold
  • recognising colours and putting a picture together

How to use it in class

  1. In Colour detectives, let the children bring the objects they find to the board.
  2. Prepare a tasting: a piece of lemon, some sugar and some salt, and let the children name each taste.
