About the activity

In What do I need when… children see a child who has a cold or a fever, or a sore throat, tummy ache, headache or earache, and choose things that will help, such as warm tea, medicine from the doctor or a cold compress. In Good or bad? they decide what is right when we are ill, such as sneezing into your elbow, blowing your nose into a tissue or staying in bed and drinking warm tea. In Doctor’s kit they choose what belongs in the doctor’s bag.

The activity helps children understand why rest, drinks and listening to the doctor matter when we are ill, and makes a visit to the doctor less scary.

What children develop

  • healthy habits when ill and stopping germs from spreading
  • vocabulary about the body, illness and medicine
  • telling right from wrong behaviour
  • sorting objects by what they are for

How to use it in class

  1. Start with a chat: What do you do at home when you are ill?
  2. After the game, play doctors with the children using a toy doctor’s kit.
