About the activity

The children follow a map through the snowy forest to the forest feeder. There are five stops on the way, and after each one an animal heads off to the feeder. In Whose tracks are these? they follow tracks in the snow and guess who walked there. In Who sleeps, who is awake? they move each animal to the winter-sleep side or to the side of animals that stay awake. In Feed the animals they give each animal as much food as the board shows – a number or dots. In Move like animals the whole class gets moving: jumping like a hare, stomping like a wild boar and standing still like statues when the forester comes. In Help the forester they put hay, corn, acorns, carrots, apples and salt in the right place at the feeder.

At the end all the animals meet at the feeder on a winter evening.

What children develop

  • learning about forest animals and how they live in winter
  • counting to 5 with numbers and dots
  • attention and memory when following tracks and sorting
  • moving and stopping on a signal

How to use it in class

  1. On a walk, look for real animal tracks in the snow with the children and compare them with the game.
  2. Before the movement stop, push the chairs aside so everyone has space around them.
