About the activity

A child in a T-shirt and joggers stands in the hallway, shivering with cold. The children choose a girl or a boy, and after each of the four games the child puts on another piece of clothing: a wool jumper and hat, a warm jacket, mittens, a scarf and snow boots. In From sheep to hat they put the pictures of a story in order, showing how a sheep's wool becomes a hat, and then sort warm things to the snowflake and summer things to the sun. In Dressing sequence they dress the child in the right order, from tights to mittens. In Matching mittens they find pairs of mittens on the washing line, count pairs on the bench and find the mitten without a pair. In Buttons and zips they trace a zip, buttons, stripes on a hat, boot laces and a wave on a jumper. When the child is fully dressed, they run out into the snow to build a snowman, go sledging and make a snow angel.

The game uses no spoken words. Icons and a pointing hand show what to do.

What children develop

  • recognising winter clothes and how they keep us warm
  • sequencing: the story of wool and getting dressed step by step
  • finding pairs, counting and sorting warm and summer things
  • fine motor skills when tracing a zip, buttons, stripes and a wave

How to use it in class

  1. Before playing, practise in the cloakroom the order in which we get dressed to go outside.
  2. Bring a ball of wool or a wool jumper to the classroom so the children can feel the wool.
