About the activity

A tree with a bird feeder stands in a snowy garden, and there are four games to choose from. In Meet the birds, a sparrow, a great tit, a woodpecker, a blackbird and a dove land on the tree. When tapped, a bird grows bigger and shows how we can recognise it. Then the children find the right bird from a detail in the magnifying glass. In More, fewer, same they compare which branch has more or fewer birds (9 rounds). In What birds eat they prepare five kinds of food: tap seeds out of a sunflower, rub grains out of wheat ears, crack walnuts, cut an apple and dry grapes. In Build a bird feeder they trace the parts of the feeder on a plan, put it together and fill it with seeds, and the birds fly in.

The game uses no spoken words. Icons and a pointing hand show what to do.

What children develop

  • recognising birds that stay for the winter by their features
  • comparing amounts: more, fewer, the same
  • fine motor skills when tapping, rubbing, cutting and tracing
  • caring for animals in winter

How to use it in class

  1. Hang a bird feeder outside the classroom window with the children and watch which birds come.
  2. In More, fewer, same, ask the children to count the birds on the branches out loud too.
