About the activity

In What belongs to winter? children drag everything that belongs to winter into the snowy landscape. In Count the snowflakes the teacher chooses whether the children count to 5 or to 10, and whether the snowballs show numbers or dots. The melting snowman is a movement game: when the snowman melts, the children slowly lie down on the floor, and when it freezes again, they slowly stand up. In Clap the word the children clap the syllables of winter words.

The activity combines learning about winter with counting, movement and word games.

What children develop

  • learning about winter and winter weather
  • counting to 5 or 10 and recognising numerals
  • breaking words into syllables
  • coordination and reacting to an instruction

How to use it in class

  1. Play The melting snowman on a carpet so the children can lie down.
  2. When clapping, let the children think of more winter words.
