About the activity

The map of a snowy park has six stations, and after each game a medal is hung at the station. In What does the athlete need? the children give the skier, the sledger, the figure skater, the hockey player and the snowball thrower what they need: skis, a helmet, skates, a hockey stick or warm mittens. In Slalom they guide the skier along the path between the gates to the finish. In How many children are riding? they count the children on a sled up to 5 or up to 10 and compare which sled has more, fewer or the same. In Slow or fast? they listen to the figure skater's tune and decide whether it was slow like a tortoise or fast like a hare. In Fair play they decide whether the hockey players' behaviour is nice or not nice. In Snowball letters they throw a snowball at the picture whose name starts with the given letter and then clap the word in syllables. After all six medals, the athletes stand on the winners' podium.

The game uses no spoken words. Pictures, icons and a pointing hand show what to do.

What children develop

  • recognising winter sports and the kit that goes with them
  • fine motor skills when guiding the skier between the gates
  • counting to 5 and to 10 and comparing more, fewer and the same
  • listening for tempo, the first sound of a word and syllables
  • fair play and being kind to opponents

How to use it in class

  1. After playing, set up your own slalom between cones outside or in the gym.
  2. Play slow and fast music and let the children move like a tortoise or a hare.
