About the activity

The game has three steps. First, children roll a ball with their finger along a round path, anticlockwise, and the ball grows as it rolls. This way they roll a big, a medium and a small ball and two little balls for arms. Then they build the snowman from the biggest ball to the smallest and add the little balls as arms. Finally, they dress the snowman any way they like. From the shelves they choose a hat, a beanie, a pot or a bucket, a carrot or pine cone nose, eyes, a mouth, a scarf, buttons, stick arms and a broom, a shovel or mittens.

Children take a photo of their finished snowman in a My snowman frame. The photos are collected in a gallery, so at the end you can look at the whole class's snowmen. At the start of each step a pointing hand shows what to do, so children don't need to read. The game has no voice-over, just gentle winter music.

What children develop

  • fine motor skills and smooth circular hand movement
  • comparing sizes and ordering from biggest to smallest
  • creativity and making their own choices
  • naming objects and parts of the snowman

How to use it in class

  1. Children can take turns: one rolls the balls, another builds the snowman and a third dresses him.
  2. When the photo appears, ask the children what their snowman is called and what he is wearing.
